PLAY THERAPY
"To develop healthily, young children don't need to know how to read, they need to know how to play"
Play therapy helps children with attachment disorders, behavioral disorders, emotional fluctuations (in the home and school environment), socially excluded children, frightened and withdrawn children, children with low self esteem, children without boundaries, children with psychosomatic and other problems.
WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY?
Play therapy for children is the same as therapy for adults. Children's play is a natural way of communication, just as talking is for adults. In the playroom, toys serve as words, and play becomes the child's language. Special toys are provided in therapy to help children express what is challenging for them to articulate verbally. When children can express their feelings in the presence of a trained therapist who understands them, they begin to feel better as they release their emotions. During play therapy, the therapist creates a safe and nurturing environment that allows the child to play freely. Play is understood as a child's means of communication, expressing thoughts, feelings, needs, and desires. In the playroom, the child learns to navigate real-life situations, utilizing their natural abilities and inner resources, while also acquiring skills in self-regulation and self-control.
DOES MY CHILD NEED THERAPY?
Most children go through certain difficulties during a specific period of their childhood (at home, at school, during their parents' divorce and separation, in relationships with other children, and so on), or they behave in ways that begin to worry their parents or teachers. Some children need more assistance in certain matters compared to others. In general, if you, as a parent, your child's teacher, or a pediatrician are concerned about their behavior, or if your child is having difficulties adapting to changes at school, play therapy is a recommended way to help your child
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Play therapy takes place once a week and lasts 45 minutes. Meetings with the child take place without the presence of a parent. Consultations with parents take place approximately after 4-5 meetings with the child. The length of therapy depends on the severity of the problems the child is experiencing. The recommended minimum number of therapies for less serious problems is 12.
WHAT YOU SHOULD SAY TO A CHILD ABOUT THERAPY?
You can tell your child that every week they will meet with a therapist in a special playroom where there are lots of toys. If your child asks why they have to go to the playroom, you can tell them something like: "When things are a bit confusing for you at home (or at school), it helps to have a special place where you can play."
